Mario P S Chin, PhD
Prof. Mario P. S. Chin has a wealth of experience in cutting-edge medical research and development. He is a bioentrepreneur and an expert in medical genetics and genomics. He is the Scientific Director of Amvet Biosciences and Ambio Technology, R&D Director of Ploin Pharmaceuticals, Associate Director of the Institute of Genomics at Huaqiao University, Professor in the Huaqiao University School of Biomedical Sciences and Advanced-Level Entrepreneurial and Innovative Talent of Fujian Province, China.
Prof. Chin is a pioneer in personalized healthcare solutions; his uniquely devised DNA test products can fulfill diverse consumer and market needs. He has developed and commercialized over 100 DNA tests and introduced them to the medical market in Hong Kong. In addition to running a biotechnology business, Prof. Chin collaborates with “Thousand Talent Professor” Philipp Kapranov on the translational research of novel cancer markers and the development of new cancer DNA tests for clinical applications.
Prof. Chin was an Assistant Professor at Temple University School of Medicine and Principal Investigator at the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. He successfully identified HIV-associated genes in the human genome, bringing new insights to the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Prior to that, he was Aaron Diamond Scholar at the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center in New York City and worked closely with renowned HIV/AIDS expert, Prof. David D. Ho. Prof. Chin was also in charge of several translational medical research projects at the National Cancer Institute in the U.S. Moreover, during the bird flu incidents in Hong Kong, Prof. Chin developed rapid DNA tests for the HKSAR Government and contributed significantly to the influenza pandemic preparedness program in Hong Kong.
Prof. Chin has published numerous scientific papers on medical genetics and its applications, and was the sole Principal Investigator of two National Institutes of Health Research Grants worth over USD 1 million. He also received several awards from the National Institutes of Health, the Comprehensive NeuroAIDS Center and the International AIDS Society for his innovations in science. He was invited to lecture at the University of Washington, Rockefeller University, City University of New York and several international scientific conferences. He served on the scientific and funding committees of the American Cancer Society and the University of Wisconsin, the scientific review committees of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Institutes of Health, and the mentoring committee of the International AIDS Society. He also serves on the editorial and review boards of several international journals.
Prof. Chin received his PhD in molecular genetics from the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Medicine, where he was a Swire Scholar, and graduated with a BSc (Hons) in zoology from the University of Hong Kong. He received professional certificate in medical product development at the University of California, Irvine.
